The artist Francis Bacon

  • One of the most important figurative painters of the 20th century.
  • Distorted faces, deformed bodies and sombre colouring define his style.
  • His works have regularly achieved top prices at auctions for many years.

Francis Bacon, born on 28 October 1909 in Dublin, deceased on 28 April 1992 in Madrid, was a British painter who became one of the most important representational artists of the 20th century in the 1960s, not at least thanks to a retrospective of his works at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Bacon is regarded as a self-taught artist. His early motifs are religious in character and reveal some Picasso  influences. His important triptych Three Studies of Figures at the Foot of a Crucifixion from 1944 already reflects this cubistic orientation.

In the 1960s, he increasingly devoted himself to portraying his closest friends in an oversubscribed manner, and in the 1970s, after the suicide of his partner, his art became visibly darker. His paintings frequently display surreal-looking, deformed depictions of human bodies and limbs in dark colours. He also often fashions serial productions in which he depicts different variations or sequences of the same motif, often laid out as triptycha or diptycha.

A significant motif in Bacon's post-war works is the mouth wide open in a scream, which has become a characteristic attribute of his art. One of the most famous paintings that has the scream as its central theme is The Study for the Child Nurse in the film The Battleship Potemkin from 1957. His art is often described in terms of cruel, brutal imagery.

As a teenager, Bacon moved to London due to his difficult family circumstances and quickly became integrated into the artistic scene of the metropolis. There, he maintained contacts with artists such as Lucian Freud, Isabel Rawsthorne and John Deakin. On 14 May 2008, his work Triptych (1976) was auctioned for USD 86.3 million, and his triptych Three Studies of Lucian Freud (1969) even for USD 142.4 million on 12 November 2013.

Der Künstler Francis Bacon

  • Einer der bedeutendsten gegenständlichen Maler des 20. Jahrhunderts.
