The artist Shahzia Sikander

  • Pakistani-American artist based in New York.
  • Her work includes painting, printmaking, animation, installation and performance.
  • Modernized Central Asian miniature painting, now called neo-miniature.

When Shahzia Sikander moved to the United States in 1993 at the age of 24 to pursue a master's degree at the Rhode Island School of Design, she was already a well-known artist in her native Pakistan. Born in Lahore in 1969, she studied traditional miniature painting at the National College of Arts. Her bachelor's thesis, The Scroll, combines the classical style of painting with her life as a modern Pakistani woman. Sikander won numerous national art awards and was a faculty member at her university in Lahore until she moved to the United States.

The modernization of Central Asian miniature painting became the focus of Sikander's work; The Scroll is considered the first work of so-called neo-miniature. After receiving her master's degree in 1995, Sikander began experimenting with abstract and surreal forms, which gave her paintings a new direction. Soft, organic structures mingled with geometric ones from the Islamic art tradition.

In the years that followed, Sikander explored other media such as animation, printmaking, video, installation, and performance, with painting taking a back seat. The richly detailed works, which reveal Sikander's training as a miniature painter, explore gender identities, racism, and colonial history. Traditional motifs are combined with contemporary innovations to create unique works of art. In 2006, she was named a MacArthur Fellow for her influential work.

Since 2017, Sikander has developed an interest in sculpture, revisiting ideas from her earlier work. Her golden-looking figure NOW (2023) combines traditions of 12th-century Indian sculpture, as well as European depictions of Venus, with a contemporary trend of creating hybrid beings of humans and plants. The work sits alongside older sculptures on the roof of the Appellate Division courthouse, the First Department of the Supreme Court in New York.

Die Künstlerin Shahzia Sikander

  • Pakistanisch-amerikanische Künstlerin aus New York.

Shahzia Sikander in a nutshell

Sikander is considered an influential contemporary artist, which is why her list of solo exhibitions is long. She has had shows at the Morgan Library & Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, both in New York, the San Diego Museum of Art, MAXXI in Rome, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, to name a few.

Sikander's works are in collections of numerous world-renowned museums. These include the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, all in New York, as well as the Hammer Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, both in Los Angeles.

Yes, Sikander was a participant in the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005, where she showed her work SpiNN (2003), a mixture of mural and video projected onto it, in the exhibition Always a Little Further.

The artist was born in 1969 in Lahore, the second largest city in Pakistan. She has lived in the United States, in New York City, since 1993. She moved to the country to study at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Sikander is known for expanding the pre-modern and classical tradition of miniature painting in Central and South Asia and founding the form now known as neo-miniature. Bringing traditional and historical practices into dialogue with contemporary international art practices, Sikander's diverse and investigative work examines colonial archives to renew Orientalist narratives in Western art history from a feminist perspective.

Shahzia Sikander quotes

»Initially I explored the tension between illustration and fine art when I first encountered miniature painting in my late teens. Championing the formal aspects of the Indo-Persian miniature-painting genre has often been at the core of my practice.«
»The purpose is to point out, and not necessarily define. I find this attitude a useful way to navigate the complex and often deeply rooted cultural and sociopolitical stances that envelop us twenty-four hours and day, seven days a week.«
»I think context, location matters a lot. Because location obviously in my situation, it's the space in which the work is going to be exhibited. And since some of the work I do is created onsite, it requires a different type of space, versus the smaller drawings or more subject-oriented work. So that the context becomes important.«
»This is the first place that I'd been in my three or four years in the U.S. [where] I wasn't being seen through an ethnic lens. ... So I could be who I wanted to be. ... I felt the same kind of confidence that I had when my work got recognized in Pakistan.«
– on moving to New York City
