The artist Tracey Emin

  • British artist from the London environment of the Young British Artists in the 90s.
  • Was part of the sensational exhibition »Sensation«, which caused controversy worldwide.
  • Launched her career together with Sarah Lucas in her »Shop«.

Tracey Emin is a British artist of the Young British Artists, who loves to provoke with her autobiographical art. She was born in 1963 in Croydon, London, the daughter of two twins. She left school early at the age of 13. Nevertheless, she graduated from Maidstone College of Art in 1986 and moved to London in 1987. There she studied art at the Royal College of Art and philosophy at Birkbeck University of London from 1987 to 1989.

Her career began in 1993 with a short but significant project, the shop she ran with Sarah Lucas in Shoreditch. Although the shop only lasted six months, it allowed the two artists to gain a professional foothold. They sold all sorts of handmade goods, with an ironic take on the (art) world. There were T-shirts with slogans like »Complete Arsehole« or »Fucking Useless«. Emin's first solo exhibition, My Major Retrospective, followed shortly thereafter at White Cube in London.

Like most Young British Artists, her breakthrough came with Charles Saatchi's legendary exhibition Sensation, which premiered at the Royal Academy in 1997. It later traveled to Berlin and New York. Some of the exhibits, including Emin's Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995 (1995), were controversial at the time because of their perceived controversial, particularly sexual, content and sparked heated debate.

New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani wanted to ban the exhibition. In the following years, Emin continued her artistic journey with Exploration of the Soul - Journey Across America, which toured various cities in the United States.

Emin was also included in the prestigious 1999 Turner Prize exhibition at the Tate Gallery, and her contribution My Bed (1998), an unmade bed with used condoms and blood-stained underwear, sold at auction in 2014 for £2.2 million. Emin herself likes to describe her work as a  »living autobiography« in which she reveals different chapters of her sometimes tragic life story.

She deals with sexual abuse, the search for female identity, and the desire to escape her life. Emin likes to confront the viewer in a direct and provocative way.

In 2007, Emin was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and received a Doctor of Philosophy from London Metropolitan University and a PhD from the University of Kent. In the same year, she designed the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 2011, she was appointed Professor of Drawing by the Royal Academy of Arts. She is only the second female professor since its founding in 1768.

Kurz darauf folgte Emins erste Einzelausstellung My Major Retrospective in der Galerie White Cube in London.

Einige Exponate, darunter Emin's Werk Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995 (1995), stießen damals wegen ihrer vermeintlich kontroversen, vor allem sexuellen, Inhalte auf Widerstand und verursachten heftige Diskussionen.
