The artist Uta Barth

  • German photographer living in Los Angeles.
  • Creates unconventional photographs that encourage reflection on seeing itself.
  • Is a 2012 MacArthur Fellow.

»The question for me always is how can I make you aware of your own looking, instead of losing your attention to thoughts about what it is that you are looking at«, Uta Barth explains of her unusual photographic works. Her images, described as »empty«, are often blurred and move at the transition to abstraction. Barth explores the properties and also the limits of human vision.

As a twelve-year-old, Uta Barth moved with her family to California in 1970, where her father worked at Stanford University. She spoke no English and experienced a culture shock: her hometown of West Berlin was marked by the atmosphere of the Cold War and the division of Germany. In California she experienced a freer attitude to life; to this day she lives in Los Angeles.

After completing her master's degree at the University of California in LA in 1985, Barth drew attention to herself with black-and-white photographs that deal with visual impressions of optical patterns and repetition. She has been a visiting professor at this university since 2012, having previously taught at the University of California at Riverside from 1990 to 2008. Also in 2012, she received the annual MacArthur Fellowship. Barth emphasised that she still wants to continue teaching because it forces her to engage with students as an artist − which supports her creativity.

Photography literally means drawing with light. In 2011, Barth developed the photographic series ...and to draw a bright white line with light, with which she explores the origins of her medium. She depicted rooms and her own body parts under a wide variety of lighting conditions. This series marks a turning point in Barth's work, as she is now concerned with the creation of the images rather than with human vision.

Die Künstlerin Uta Barth

  • In Los Angeles lebende deutsche Fotografin.

Uta Barth in a nutshell

Barth's photographs are often described as »empty«. They are blurred and hover at the border to abstraction. Barth uses her photography to explore the properties and limits of human vision. A turning point is her series ...and to draw a bright white line with light from 2011. In it, she explored the origins of photography, depicted rooms and her own body parts under a wide variety of lighting conditions - and thus placed the focus on the creation of the image and no longer on human vision.

Various auction houses regularly put works by Uta Barth up for sale - including Ketterer, Sotheby's, Bonhams or Christie's. It is worth subscribing to newsletters and regularly checking the announcements on the websites of these auction houses.
