MAN RAY (1890–1976) Gertrude Stein, 1929 gelatin silver print, mounted on paper signed and dated 'Man Ray / Paris 1929' in pencil (mount, recto); stamped 'Man Ray / 31 bis Rue / Campagne / Première / Paris' in ink and annotated in pencil (mount, verso); credited and titled on affixed museum label (frame backing board) image/sheet: 9 x 6 3 ⁄ 4 in. (22.8 x 17.1 cm.) mount: 12 1 ⁄ 2 x 9 1 ⁄ 8 in. (31.7 x 23.1 cm.)
Auction result misses estimated price range
In October this year a collector was able to acquire the work Gertrude Stein, 1929 by Man Ray for USD 6,300.00 (€ 5,961.39). This price was achieved in the auction A Century of Art: Photographs from The Gerald Fineberg Collection at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of USD 10,000.00 – 15,000.00 set by the auction house. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Man Ray achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Le Violon d'Ingres, 1924 in May last year with an auction result of USD 12,412,500.00 (€ 11,566,955.55).
Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne
Im Oktober diesen Jahres konnte ein Sammler die Arbeit Gertrude Stein, 1929 von Man Ray für USD 6.300,00 (€ 5.961,39) erwerben. Dieser Preis wurde in der Auktion A Century of Art: Photographs from The Gerald Fineberg Collection bei Christies in London erzielt und lag noch unterhalb der von dem Auktionshaus angesetzten Schätzpreisspanne von USD 10.000,00 – 15.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Man Ray erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Le Violon d'Ingres, 1924 im Mai letzten Jahres mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 12.412.500,00 (€ 11.566.955,55).
