MAN RAY (1890–1976) Les Voies Lact ées Turin: Galleria Il Fauno, 1974. Portfolio of eleven gelatin silver prints, each stamped on the verso; each mounted on folded presentation sleeve with printed text; each image/sheet approximately 12 1 ⁄ 8 x 8 1 ⁄ 2 in. (30.7 x 21.5 cm.), each framed in brown wood frames with plexi, 16 x 23 1 ⁄ 2 in. (40.6. x 59.6 cm.); together with title page signed, numbered and inscribed in English and French, 'For Henry Miller / this stuttering elucrubation(sic) / in memory of more valid / souvenirs, affectionately / Man Ray / 1974 / pour Henry Miller / avec toute la sympatie / de Luciano..1974'; number fifty-one from an edition of seventy-five, plus twenty-five artist's proofs.
Auction result misses estimated price range
In October this year a collector was able to acquire the work Les Voies Lactées by Man Ray for USD 1,260.00 (€ 1,192.28). This price was achieved in the auction A Century of Art: Photographs from The Gerald Fineberg Collection at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of USD 3,000.00 – 5,000.00 set by the auction house. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Man Ray achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Le Violon d'Ingres, 1924 in May last year with an auction result of USD 12,412,500.00 (€ 11,566,955.55).
Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne
Im Oktober diesen Jahres konnte ein Sammler die Arbeit Les Voies Lactées von Man Ray für USD 1.260,00 (€ 1.192,28) erwerben. Dieser Preis wurde in der Auktion A Century of Art: Photographs from The Gerald Fineberg Collection bei Christies in London erzielt und lag noch unterhalb der von dem Auktionshaus angesetzten Schätzpreisspanne von USD 3.000,00 – 5.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Man Ray erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Le Violon d'Ingres, 1924 im Mai letzten Jahres mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 12.412.500,00 (€ 11.566.955,55).
