WALKER EVANS (1903–1975) Photographs from African Negro Art, 1935 thirty-four gelatin silver prints thirty-three variously numbered in Harry Lunn archive stamps in pencil and ink (verso); one credited and annotated in pencil, with affixed collection label (verso) image/sheet sizes ranging from 9 x 3 1 ⁄ 8 in. (22.8 x 7.9 cm.) to 9 x 6 1 ⁄ 4 in. (22.8 x 15.8 cm.)

In October this year Christies in London held the auction A Century of Art: Photographs from The Gerald Fineberg Collection, which included the work Photographs from African Negro Art, 1935 by Walker Evans. The »bidding war« ended at USD 81,900.00 (€ 77,498.11), 64% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Walker Evans - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Penny Picture Display, Savannah, which sold at auction in October 2003 for USD 197,900.00 (€ 170,471.19).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 64 % übertroffen
Im Oktober diesen Jahres führte Christies in London die Auktion A Century of Art: Photographs from The Gerald Fineberg Collection durch, in der auch die Arbeit Photographs from African Negro Art, 1935 von Walker Evans zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von USD 81.900,00 (€ 77.498,11) und damit 64% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Für andere Arbeiten von Walker Evans mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Penny Picture Display, Savannah beobachtet, die im Oktober 2003 für USD 197.900,00 (€ 170.471,19) versteigert wurde.
