Since its founding in 1973, the Biennale of Sydney has always made cultural and social aspects of Australia the main themes of its exhibitions. The third oldest Biennale in the world, this strategy has earned it worldwide acclaim and is now considered one of the most important art events. Innovative and provocative works of art with high social relevance have been discovered there again and again for decades.
This year, the Biennale is all about nature: under the title rīvus (Latin: river), visual art and design works are presented that show a closeness to science and philosophy in relation to ecosystems. More than 70 artists raise questions about man's interaction with nature and come up with possible solutions on how to live sustainably and preserve the remaining nature. The forward-looking Biennale of Sydney is directed by Colombian José Roca and will take place from March 12 to June 13, 2022.
