The jury praised her interweaving of drawing, mapping and writing, which enables different perspectives on her works: »Her work suggests a hidden narrative without being literal or following a story«. Fedele Friede's (*1997) drawings can be read from all sides, forcing a disorientation that opens the way to new perspectives on space and time. In August 2024, Friede received the prestigious Horst Janssen Graphics Prize from the Claus Hüppe Foundation, which was awarded for the eighth time. The prize for young artists working with drawing and printmaking is endowed with 20,000 euros and comes with an exhibition and a publication. For the second time, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is the exhibition venue: der saum löst sich (the hem comes loose) opens on March 28 and can be seen until September 7.

Fedele Maura Friede lives and works in Leipzig. She studied from 2016 to 2024 at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig under Prof. Anne Speier (until 2021 Prof. Ingo Meller) and from 2020 to 2024 at the Institute of Cultural Studies at the University of Leipzig. Since 2023 she has been part of the curatorial collective of KV – Verein für zeitgenössische Kunst e.V. and together with the artists Karolina Koßmann and Theresa Rothe she runs the non-commercial art space Klub Portitz, which was founded in summer 2024.

The Horst Janssen Graphic Arts Prize, named after the Hamburg draughtsman, graphic artist and photographer Horst Janssen (1929-1995), has been awarded every three years since 2003 to outstanding young artists. Nominations are made exclusively on the basis of proposals from professors at German art academies. A five-member jury selects a prizewinner from this shortlist. The aim of the prize is to promote young artists and new positions in the field of graphic art in exchange with universities and academies based in Germany.Art.Salon
