Every three years, the Dieter Krieg Prize, worth €15,000, is awarded to a purchase. Last year, the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal received the award and acquired the work double box (2023) by Jaana Caspary. Her works depict real objects, objects of mass consumption: the object is removed from its functional context, transformed into a new material and a new form—for example, through duplication—and thus becomes an abstract work of art. Jaana Caspary demonstrates the sculptural potential inherent in the object forms that are so familiar to us. In the accompanying exhibition, Caspary's work is shown alongside a selection of large and small-format sculptures and wall reliefs from the museum's collection, as well as a painting by Dieter Krieg (1937-2005) from his series Malsch Wanne (1970). The show runs from October 11, 2025, to February 8, 2026.
Jaana Caspary was born in Wuppertal in 1988 and worked as an assistant in Tony Cragg's studio during her training and studies. In 2014, she graduated from the Düsseldorf Art Academy in Prof. Didier Vermeiren's sculpture class. Since then, she has had numerous group and solo exhibitions, most recently in 2023 at the Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden, the Kunstverein Schwäbisch Hall, and in 2025 at the Galerie der Stadt Lüdenscheid. In 2024, she received the »Artima« sponsorship award from Art Karlsruhe.
The Dieter Krieg Prize has been awarded since 2004 by the Dieter Krieg Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the work of the renowned German painter. Most recently, the Lenbachhaus in Munich was honored in 2021. The museum acquired a painting by Michaela Eichwald, who holds a professorship in abstract painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
