»Facing New Challenges« – Cities as Seismographs of Social Life

With Facing New Challenges, the Heidelberger Kunstverein will be showing films and cinematic installations with a focus on cities from 10 November. In this context, they are intended to serve as »seismographs of social life« by revealing the effects of society through changing views, hidden memories and various forms of discrimination, but also diversity in the cityscape.

Facing New Challenges, a cooperation of the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg (IFFMH), the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Heidelberg and the Heidelberger Kunstverein (HDKV), will open on the evening of 10 November 2021. Far beyond the programme of the IFFMH, the Heidelberger Kunstverein will be showing films and cinematic installations under this title in which cities function as »seismographs of social life«. The waves and tremors that can be registered by such a device can be seen here as images for memories, digital change and political confrontations. The classic sociological dimensions of disadvantage such as racism, classism and sexism play just as much a role in the urban image as catastrophes and violence.

The artistic positions represented illuminate cities from the perspective of the bodies moving within them. A reference to reality is established through the possibility of exchange: The exhibition is embedded in a suitable supporting programme, which sometimes includes several »Tafelrunden« (tables) - the International Building Exhibition Heidelberg and the HDKV invite visitors to eat together in the exhibition, during which experts encourage visitors to discuss the topics presented, to broaden their view and to enter into conversation. The exhibition can be visited until 30 January 2022.Art.Salon
