Christoph Pauschenwein

Fluffy planets

Christoph Pauschenwein urges us not to lose sight of what is essential in this world. His artworks blend seemingly incompatible elements into a unique aesthetic, combining traditional drawing and painting with digital transformation in unexpected ways. Supposed opposites are not only deliberately allowed to coexist, but are harmoniously united with the intention of re-exploring our understanding of nature, technology, and our role between them.

Christoph Pauschenwein does not seem to think much of divisions and conflicts, of either/or opposites. Instead, he seeks what connects, brings together, and unites antonyms both in his artistic techniques and in his visual language. Inspired by impressions from nature, he gives his figurative paintings a digital aesthetic, which in turn becomes the template for other, actually digitally created works with abstract interpretations of floral motifs. He takes this synthesis of craftsmanship, digital techniques, and organic references to the extreme in his series Planets. They show amorphous structures, like fluffy pom-poms that you want to touch, or like celestial bodies from a parallel universe. Together, they form a fantastic galaxy of symbiosis between opposites, cuddly soft, often in cheerful, inviting colors, however, on closer inspection, of hard, almost cool precision, seemingly natural beings with their own character and yet clearly artificial.

By combining different approaches and concepts in his work, Pauschenwein aims to broaden the viewer's perspective and sensitize them to new impulses. For him, the compositions are a mirror of the contrasts that characterize our world today: we strive for increasing technological advancement, yet we are rooted in nature; rationality is supposed to be the guiding principle behind every sensible decision – even though we are highly emotional beings, constantly striving for order while living in chaos. These contradictions can cause everything to drift apart and ultimately break down, but they can also be balanced out in a harmonious equilibrium of beauty and harmony, as Pauschenwein's works clearly demonstrate.

»My works are an attempt to explore the balance between the analog and the digital. With each image, I aim to combine the depth and precision of realistic painting with the freedom and openness of digital abstraction. The resulting forms reflect the contrasts that collide in our modern world.«

Frank Hinrichs

In sculptural paintings, Frank Hinrichs describes fleeting moments as a synthesis of movement and permanence. His pictures present themselves like scripts of a multi-layered reflection on the transience of the moment, made visible through a deep rootedness in the material process.

New York: Helene Schjerfbeck at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

She is a national heroine in Finland, but has only become known internationally in recent years: Helene Schjerfbeck fascinates with her original, simple style. For the first time, a major museum in the USA is presenting her work: Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck opens on December 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
