Both technically and in terms of content, the design possibilities of printmaking are particularly diverse: from woodcut to copperplate engraving and etchings to screen printing, new techniques have been developed again and again, each contributing to a certain character of the finished work of art. Prints have been used in both figurative and abstract art movements, and contemporary artists have also turned to prints.

The Kunstmuseum Bayreuth is showing works from the collection of Friedemann Gottschald, who mainly collects prints. His focus here is on portfolio works: Portfolios with loose sheets that can, however, be connected thematically, for example, and thus offer added value that goes beyond the individual sheet. The scope of the collection in terms of content is already hinted at in the title of the exhibition − Altenbourg was banned from exhibiting in the GDR until shortly before his death, while Zettl was one of the most sought-after book illustrators in the GDR.
In addition to the aforementioned artists, works by Michael Morgner, Max Uhlig and Strawalde (Jürgen Böttcher), among others, will also be on display. The Bayreuth Art Museum has prepared a comprehensive program to accompany the exhibition, which will vividly convey the world of printmaking. On two dates yet to be determined, the collector Friedemann Gottschald will personally guide visitors through the exhibition.
