First comprehensive British art exhibition on St. Francis of Assisi

From the Middle Ages to Marvel: an unparalleled legacy

Died in the 13th century, his legacy continues to resonate today: St. Francis of Assisi inspired art not only in the Middle Ages. How he even managed to appear in a Marvel comic is on display at the National Gallery in London starting May 6.

It is the UK's first comprehensive art exhibition to focus on St. Francis of Assisi, one of history's most inspirational and revered figures. Beginning May 6, the National Gallery in London will be the first to venture into embedding the life and legacy of the saint in an artistic milieu. Saint Francis of Assisi breaks down how Saint Francis (1182-1226), with his spiritual radicalism, commitment to the poor, love of God and nature, urgent appeals for peace, and openness to dialogue with other religions, continues to resonate today.

In the Ground Floor Galleries, the museum displays art and images of Francis of Assisi from the 13th century to the present. The earliest medieval tablets, relics and manuscripts contrast modern films and even a Marvel comic. The objects bear witness to how the saint inspired artists across continents, generations and religions. In addition, the exhibition spans paintings from the National Gallery collection (e.g., Sassetta and Botticelli) to international loans, including works by Caravaggio and Josefa de Óbidos, and an exciting new commission by Richard Long. Then, until July 30, visitors will learn all about the artistic legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi.Art.Salon
