From November 13, 2021, the Kölnischer Kunstverein will show works by Daniela Ortiz in an exhibition entitled Daniela Ortiz - Nurtured by the defeat of the colonizers our seeds will raise. Until January 30, 2022, those interested can view the Peruvian artist's works, which she uses to create visual narratives and spaces of tension that explore concepts of nationality, racialization, social class, and gender to critically illuminate structures of colonial, patriarchal, and capitalist power. In her recent projects, Ortiz focuses on the European migration control system, its connection to colonialism, and the legal structure created by European institutions to inflict violence on racialized and migrant communities. Daniela Ortiz - Nurtured by the defeat of the colonizers our seeds will raise represents Ortiz's first institutional solo exhibition in Germany, accompanied by the artist's book The Rebellion of the Roots (2021).
Born in 1985 in Cusco, Peru, Daniela Ortiz now lives in Urubamba, Peru and advocates for an anti-racist and anti-colonial discourse in her works, which include primarily drawings, embroidery, children's books, and installations. Recently, she has returned to a more visual and craft-based approach to her artistic practice, developing ceramic artworks as well as collages and formats such as children's books that seek to distance herself from Eurocentric conceptual art aesthetics. Her work has been exhibited internationally on several occasions, including at Kunsthalle Wien as well as KADIST art foundation in Paris (both in 2021), Kunstverein Hamburg (2020), La Virreina Centre de la Imatge in Barcelona (2019), and Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (2016).
