Opening of the shortlist exhibition for the Nationalgalerie Prize 2021

The shortlist exhibition for the Prize of the National Gallery is always a small highlight in the Berlin art scene, and now the time has come again - on 16 September, this year's exhibition opens at Hamburger Bahnhof with the works of the four nominated artists, all of whom are still at the beginning of their creative careers - but already have impressive works to show.

Lamin Fofana, Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff, Sandra Mujinga and Sung Tieu were nominated by an international jury in February. Coming from different countries, they live and work in Germany and are considered particularly promising candidates to become a leading voice in contemporary art. The shortlist exhibition will feature both well-known and contemporary works.

Both Fofana's sound installations about (co)living in and with post-migrant societies and Tieu's cross-media environments about state critique and the search for identity process the artists' migration experiences. Mujinga challenges the concept of sculpture with her hybrid characters between human and non-human by capturing ephemeral worlds with different materials. Henkel & Pitegoff present their documentation of the socio-urban transformation of their adopted home Berlin - a transformation they themselves help to shape, among other things through their bar and art space hybrid "TV".

The prize, which includes a curated solo exhibition with accompanying publication in one of the National Gallery's houses next year, will be awarded by a second jury on 7 October.Art.Salon
