»I’m interested in how people find ways to swim and stay afloat; it’s not about the drowning«, says Gauri Gill (*1970), explaining her artistic practice. For over 20 years, Gill, who lives in New Delhi, has been photographing the Indian rural population living in poverty. Time and again she is fascinated by the humour, unexpected and sometimes eerie beauty and the will of the people. As she accompanies the everyday lives of the people, close bonds with those photographed are formed time and again. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humblebæk near Copenhagen is showing the comprehensive exhibition Gauri Gill from 26 January to 10 April 2023.

Gill has made a name for herself in the art scene with her unique photographs. She studied at the Dehli College of Art, at the Parsons School of Design in New York and at Stanford University in California. Numerous renowned museums hold Gill's photographs in their collections, and she has participated in the 58th Venice Biennale (2019) and documenta 14 (2017), among others. In 2011, Gill received the Grange Prize, Canada's most prestigious award for photography.Art.Salon
