What paintings say about the viewer
She is one of the most important figurative painters of our time: the U.S. artist Dana Schutz depicts human relationships, in all their gruesome, grotesque and absurd manifestations. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, will showcase her work beginning February 9 in Dana Schutz: Between Us.
»Paintings often say more about us than about themselves«, says painter Dana Schutz of her paintings. Her complex compositions about human relationships fascinate and disturb. They evoke conflicting emotions and depict a range of possible interpersonal constellations. Her early works tended to be claustrophobic, but later Schutz increasingly developed sceneries that she filled with numerous figures. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, is showing a selection of her grotesque paintings in Dana Schutz: Between Us. They will be on display from February 9 to June 11.
Dana Schutz (b. 1976) was born in Michigan and lives in Brooklyn in New York City. For more than two decades, she has delighted the art world with her work, which has been compared to that of Austrian painter Maria Lassnig. Schutz has participated in group exhibitions at major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Kunsthaus Zürich, and the Venice Biennale (2003).
