The artist Alberto Giacometti

  • Swiss modernist sculptor, painter and graphic artist.
  • Described as a formalist or expressionist, but also considered a surrealist.
  • Known for his long, slender sculptures.

The Swiss sculptor, painter and graphic artist Alberto Giacometti is described in various sources as a formalist as well as an expressionist or surrealist. Accordingly, the work of the modern artist is also difficult to assign to one style. The son of the Post-Impressionist painter Giovanni Giacometti was born in Borgonovo (Switzerland) on 10 October 1901. Besides his father, he was surrounded by other artists in his family: While his uncle Augusto Giacometti belonged to the Zurich Dada circle, his godfather was the Swiss painter Cuno Amiet.

In 1919, Giacometti began studying painting, sculpture and drawing in Geneva, embarked on a study trip through Italy two years later and lived mainly in Paris from 1922. There he took courses in sculpture and nude drawing with Émile-Antoine Bourdelle at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière on Montparnasse for five years. From 1928, he cultivated acquaintances with various artists, including Alexander Calder, Jean Cocteau, Max Ernst, Joan Miró and André Breton. The latter persuaded Giacometti to join his group of Surrealists. After a few years, however, he left again, losing many artist friends in the process and finding himself in a creative crisis.

He established contacts with Balthus and André Derain, among others, and began to produce his first figure compositions in 1935. In June 1940, he fled Paris with his younger brother Diego, with whom he often worked, due to the advance of the German Wehrmacht and lived in Geneva for three years from 1942. At the end of 1945, he moved back to Paris and four years later married Annette Arm, whom he had met in Geneva. She served as a model for many drawings, etchings, paintings and sculptures.

Thus, especially in the period after the war, he created his long, slender metre-high sculptures, which today are among his best-known works. In 1951, they were exhibited for the first time in a gallery in Paris, which was followed by many exhibitions throughout Europe. In 1962, Giacometti received the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale, which brought him worldwide fame. He died on 11 January 1966 in Chur, France, at the age of 65. His works are now in the important collections of the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Fondation Beyeler (Riehen/Basel), the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Fondation Maeght (Saint-Paul-de-Vence), among others.

Oktober 1901 in Borgonovo (Schweiz) geboren.

Alberto Giacometti in a nutshell

Alberto Giacometti's sculptures are expensive. An inexpensive bronze casting fetched 60,000 EUR at the Grisebach auction house in 2021: The Tête de femme (Rita). Much more frequently, however, Giacometti figures change hands for half a million to several million: his Projet pour un monument pour Gabriel Péri. Projet pour une place (1946) fetched EUR 2,676,000 (2022, Lempertz), his Femme couchée qui rêve (1929 - 1959) sold for USD 3,780,000 (2022, Christie's). Drawings and sketches by Giacometti are cheaper, but still expensive. The cheapest was in 2020: The Mère de l'artist assise II (1965) landed at CHF 875 (Christie's), the most expensive, indeed, at 828.500 USD: Autoportrait d'après la photographie d'Irving Penn (1950) (2018, Christie's).

The Swiss Alberto Giacometti became known as a sculptor and painter in Paris in the 1920s. As part of the Surrealist movement, he was also surrounded by André Breton, who included Giacometti's works in his exhibitions. In the 1930s, he manifested his style in favour of the characteristic thin, elongated figures that would later become his trademark. With his finger on the pulse of the times, his existentialist form was well received in France. In the 1950s, Giacometti's works were shown at documenta and the Venice Biennale. Because his work was so critically acclaimed, his reputation quickly solidified.

In 1958, for example, the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York exhibited one of the bronze sculptures that had already been shown at the Biennale. There, art critics like David Sylvester became aware of him, and Jean-Paul Sartre wrote a ten-page essay for the accompanying exhibition catalogue. He finally achieved worldwide fame when he was awarded the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the 1961 Venice Biennale. At that time, only five years before his death, he was already regarded as a sculptor of French existentialism on the scene. In 1998, his L'Homme qui marche I was printed on the 100-franc banknote in Switzerland.

As one of the most important representatives of Existentialism, Giacometti conveyed feelings of isolation, loneliness and existential forlornness with his emaciated, unnaturally elongated figures. The art movement was philosophically oriented, exploring human existence and its meaning in the supposedly meaningless world. Giacometti also visualised this approach by making the figures, which seemed to disappear, float as if in a kind of void.

Connections between perception and visibility also went hand in hand with Giacometti's intentions. The almost invisible human figures were just present enough to be seen – and yet they illustrate how limited perception is in relation to reality.

Giacometti made emotions present through his expressive and gestural painterly and sculptural technique: the rough and unpolished surfaces break with the idea of the imperfect and untouchable body.

Alberto Giacometti quotes

»Everything is a drawing. A sculpture is a drawing in three-dimensional space. A painting is a drawing with colours. You can say, at least for me, that everything is just drawing«. (1965)
»It's true that I'm rarely satisfied, so I keep working«.
»What interests me most about the head are the eyes. When I have grasped the eyes, the root of the nose, the distance between the eyes, the angle of vision, then the work can begin. Everything else just comes from those eyes«.
»Whether you get ahead or you fail, it's exactly the same. You can only get ahead by failing«.
