The artist Edvard Munch

  • One of the most famous painters of modernism
  • Had a formative influence on Symbolism and Expressionism
  • Is known not only for paintings but also for experimental techniques in printmaking

Illness and death shaped Edvard Munch's most famous paintings, which thus also unintentionally became a mirror of his life. There were complications at his birth in 1863; for a long time it was not certain whether Munch would survive. A few years later, his mother and one sister died of tuberculosis, and his father and another sister were diagnosed with mental illness. Munch suffered from depression, and as an adult additionally from paranoia, which was fueled by his addiction to alcohol. Munch found a way out in his aunt's painting lessons. As a young man he was able to gain initial attention in Oslo, initially still painting in a naturalistic style, and received several scholarships for trips to Paris. He continued his artistic education and found his way to the symbolic, expressive paintings with somber themes that are today among his masterpieces. The choice of subject matter was not biographically motivated, but rather intended to express the universality of human life.

In 1892, on the recommendation of the respected Norwegian painter Adelsteen Normann, Munch was invited to an exhibition at the Verein Berliner Künstler. The members of the exhibition committee, including the association's chairman Anton von Werner, were unfamiliar with Munch's paintings. It is believed that they probably expected to see some of the generally popular fjord and marine paintings, paintings in the idyllic style of the well-known Anders Zorn or in the realistic style of the influential Skagen painters. Munch exhibited 55 works in Berlin, which caused great indignation due to the painting style and its content.

After only one week, the exhibition was closed and was more present in the press as the »Munch Scandal« than almost any other art event in the German Empire. Munch himself described this in a letter as the best publicity one could get. He moved to Berlin, where, as a now well-known painter, he exerted great influence on the art scene in Germany, especially on the newly emerging Expressionism.

Despite his growing fame, including among the Parisian avant-garde, Munch was able to sell only a few paintings. He then produced prints in order to disseminate his motifs more quickly and to find a new source of income. The techniques of etching and lithography fascinated Munch more and more, so that they became an important, independent branch of his experimental, artistic activity. While in the 1880s and 1890s he mainly created gloomy, symbolist works, from around 1900 onwards he increasingly produced life-affirming landscape or garden pictures. After a nervous breakdown in 1908, he returned to his native Norway, where his fame earned him numerous commissions for portraits. In 1912, he was given a special honor when he was the only living artist, along with Pablo Picasso, to be given a room of honor at the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne. Despite an eye disease, Munch worked highly productively until he died near Oslo in 1944. In 1963, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, the Munch Museum was opened in Oslo, which moved to a huge new building in 2021. It is one of the largest museums in the world dedicated to a single artist. Munch is one of the most famous painters of his time, and his work continues to influence artists from all over the world.
