The artist Jenny Holzer

  • US conceptual and installation artist.
  • Known for her public LED lettering.
  • Themes include feminism, politics, and (power) abuse.

Before working with text as art, Jenny Holzer was an abstract painter. Born in Gallipolis, Ohio on July 29, 1950, she studied at various universities in the United States, including the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1977, she moved to New York City after earning her master's degree. Holzer was a member of the artist group Colab, which organized the influential exhibition The Times Square Show in 1980. It could be visited around the clock for a month in an abandoned massage parlor.

At the time, Holzer was participating in a study program at the Whitney Museum of American Art, after which she became artistically involved with lettering. »I use language because I wanted to offer content that people − not necessarily art professionals − could understand«, she says, explaining this focus. Holzer began her Truisms series of works, posters with ambiguous statements that she placed on walls and fences in Manhattan. The statements always addressed current issues such as AIDS, politics, feminism, (power) abuse, and environmental destruction.

Beginning in the 1980s, Holzer primarily used LED lettering for her text art, finding the most appropriate form for her artistic concerns, which she once described as »text combined with light and its effect on people«. Her works became increasingly monumental, such as her 163-meter-long neon sign spiral for the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1989. Since 2004, Holzer has been active again as a painter, pursuing text art in the process. Her so-called Dust Paintings are based on U.S. government documents or censored CIA and FBI reports. In this way, she wants to bring secret facts about the war in Iraq into the light of day.

Holzer was the second female artist after Diane Arbus to represent the USA at the Venice Biennale in 1990, where she won the Golden Lion for her installation Mother and Child. She has won numerous other awards, including the Blair Award from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1982 and the Kaiserring from the city of Goslar in 2002.

Die Künstlerin Jenny Holzer

  • US-amerikanische Konzept- und Installationskünstlerin.
  • Bekannt für ihre öffentlichen LED-Schriftzüge.
  • Thematisiert u.a.

Jenny Holzer in a nutshell

The Truisms by Jenny Holzer are a series of works consisting of almost 300 aphorisms and slogans. It is probably the best known work of the artist. She had already begun with it during her studies in 1977: she summarized concise statements from the study reading into simple sentences and put them up in Manhattan. Even then, she understood language as an image in itself, especially since it allowed her to reach a large audience.

Holzer used public space again and again, installing her finished works in telephone booths or on the walls of buildings. At some point, she moved on to larger projects, such as her installations in Times Square. All of the statements she posted under the Truisms deviated only slightly from familiar clichés, because Holzer believes people are more likely to remember something if they hear something that is a little different than usual. She also kept the longer sentences short at all times in order to reach people in just a few seconds.

Some of Jenny Holzer's works are for sale in art auctions, like those of many successful artists. Holzer's works in particular, however, also lend themselves to posters and prints, which are available for purchase in art-specific online stores. Smaller original works are also available from time to time in various museum stores or other special stores.
