The artist Julian Opie

  • Contemporary British painter, sculptor and video artist.
  • Early proponent of digital art – stylized portraits and animations made him famous.
  • Designed an album cover for the band Blur and an animated stage set for U2.

Julian Opie is a contemporary British painter, sculptor and video artist. In 1983, at the age of 25, he began making geometric figures out of sheet steel - combining several shapes into one and painting them in color. That same year he had his first solo exhibition at Nicholas Logsdale's Lisson Gallery in London. Opie was also an early proponent of digital art.

Beginning in 1997, he began a series of portraits that would make him famous outside the art world: he reduced facial features on the computer to simple black outlines - but retained the characteristics of each person. Many have argued that this stylization brings out the individuality of the faces and makes them more recognizable. Perhaps the most prominent example of this technique is Opie's design for the Blur album cover (Best of Blur, 2000), for which he was awarded Best Illustrator by Music Week CADS.

In his more recent work, done after the turn of the millennium, he breathes movement into these reduced figures. He moved away from portraiture and focused more on full-body representations - as in This is Kiera (2002) or Bryan walking (2004). Despite the constant movement, they do not move from the spot. Both works are computer-controlled animations that he has already brought to life on the flat screen or display.

To a certain extent, these animations rely on the lack of space: only the edge of the screen provides the eye with a frame, which some people interpret as a surreal effect.

Opie has also made a name for himself outside of the art world, repeatedly working closely with the music industry: in 2005, he animated a walking figure for the band U2 that could be seen as an LED during their stage show (Vertigo).

Born in London in 1958, Opie studied at Goldsmiths College, London, where he was taught by Michael Craig-Martin. His first solo exhibition was followed by a touring exhibition at the Kölnischer Kunstverein and the Groninger Museum. His international breakthrough came after he was represented at documenta 8 (1984). Since then, Opie has held solo exhibitions in Europe, Asia, Australia and the USA almost every year.

In 1995 he was awarded the Sargant Fellowship of the British School in Rome, and in 1995/96 he received a fellowship from the Atelier Calder in Saché, France. His works are in the collections of prestigious institutions such as the Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the IVAM in Valencia and the Takamatsu City Museum of Art in Japan. He is represented by a total of 12 galleries worldwide. Opie lives and works in his native London.

Insgesamt vertreten ihn 12 Galerien weltweit. Opie lebt und arbeitet in seiner Heimatstadt London.
