The artist Karel Appel

  • Dutch avant-garde artist who co-founded the CoBra group in 1948.
  • His multiple stylistic changes ranged from naive painting to Abstract Expressionism.
  • The 1953 São Paulo Biennial was the springboard for his international success.

Christiaan Karel Appel was a Dutch painter, graphic artist and sculptor. Born in Amsterdam in April 1920, Appel was a co-founder of the artists' association CoBra. The group formed in 1948 and existed until 1951, during which time it took its cues from surrealism, art brut, and occasionally from the artist Picasso,  although CoBra's members strove to turn away from surrealism and revive expressionism. It was nevertheless considered an unprecedented avant-garde movement. In his early creative period, Appel painted figuratively but stylized his subjects heavily.

He deliberately created his landscape, animal, and human images using childlike, naïve techniques and provided them with an equally simple color scheme. Some of his works from this period were considered too avant-garde by the public to be published: his mural Questioning Children in the Amsterdam Town House was covered up for years. After the CoBra period, there was a change in style of Appel's work and so he turned towards US Abstract Expressionism. He pushed the representational forms of the abstract to the extreme until the 1970s, when he again decided to return to the figurative in the 1980s - this time, however, with a more somber color scheme rather than garish.

His body of work includes paintings as well as assemblages, sculptures, and drawings. Appel studied at the Reich Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam from 1940 to 1944. Only two years after completing his studies, the Dutchman was able to celebrate his solo exhibition debut at Het Beerenhuis in Groningen. The show of his paintings at the 1953 São Paulo Biennial was the birth of his international success.

In 1951 he produced a fresco for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, in 1999 a mural for the UNESCO building in Paris, in 1959 he was part of documenta II, in 1964 of documenta III. His late work also includes various works for operas and theaters. Probably his most important project was the stage design for Mozart's Magic Flute at the 2006 Salzburg Festival - it was created shortly before his death on May 3, 2006. Today, his works can be seen among others in the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen, the Netherlands.
