The artist Peter Doig

  • One of the most influential figurative painters of the present day.
  • Many international relocations in his childhood and youth shape his pictorial compositions.
  • Combines real experiences with imagination and places of longing in his works.

Peter Doig, born 17.04.1959 in Edinburgh, is a contemporary artist who is one of the most influential figurative painters of the present day. Doig's work is characterised by his skilful way of blurring the boundaries between personal experience and places of desire. He creates figurative art that at the same time has a certain abstract character – familiar figures are lost in undefined, flat landscapes with intense colouring. Doig not only links his own photos and memories with his own imagination, he also refers to various periods of music and art history.

His visual language thrives on playing with different levels of perception by mixing the tangible, what has really happened, with pure imagination in a dream-like way. The colouring also appears dreamlike: rich blues, greens and reds regularly dominate his colouring. Doig was guided by a wide variety of styles during his artistic development. Goya, Courbet, Picasso, Max Beckman, Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke and Francesco Clemente are among his many sources of inspiration.

Doig's life, just like his artistic work, is marked by the frequent relocations during his childhood and youth. Born in Edinburgh in 1959, he lived on the Caribbean island of Trinidad from the age of two. Six years later, in 1966, his family moved to Canada and finally to London in 1979. Doig trained in painting at the Wimbledon School of Art in London, studied at St Martin's School of Art in London from 1980 to 1983 and left with a Bachelor's degree.

He eventually moved back to the Caribbean with his own family in 2002. Doig's works have been shown regularly since the 1980s in the Michael Werner Galleries in London and New York and in other renowned exhibition venues. In 2008, a retrospective was dedicated to the then 49-year-old, which was shown at the Tate Gallery in London, the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris and the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt.
