The artist Stephen Shore

  • Contemporary US photographer who takes a central role in the development of US photography
  • Considered one of the pioneers of US colour photography.
  • Known for his colour photographs of urban baseball fields, street intersections, car parks and commercial areas.

Stephen Shore, born on 08.10.1947 in New York City, is considered one of the most important contemporary photographers. The son of a Jewish family got his first camera at the age of six and sold Edward Steichen, then curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), three of his works at the age of 14. Three years later, Shore made the acquaintance of Andy Warhol and moved into his Factory at the age of 18. In the years that followed, he documented the eccentric avant-garde artists of the time there, including Edie Sedgewick and Lou Reed. The resulting black-and-white photographs, some of which he later exhibited under the title The Velvet Years, were reminiscent of the photographer Robert Frank.

In 1971, Shore's photographs became the first by a living photographer to be shown in a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City). In the 1970s, he also travelled several times through the USA and Canada, taking various photographs of industrial estates, housing estates, street intersections, baseball fields, car parks and petrol stations. Stand (1975), a photograph of a Chevron petrol station, stood out in particular - it made him internationally famous and, together with William Eggleston and Ernst Haas, one of the US pioneers of colour photography. His work in the 1960s and 1970s played a central role in the development of US photography and sparked a new interest in colour photography as the use of view cameras for documentary work.

Another culmination of his travels was the photo book Uncommon Places, which he published in 1982. Through his acquaintance with Bernd Becher, Shore's work became more familiar in Germany at the end of the 1970s and he took part in documenta 6 in 1977. His art was also shown at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (1977), the Sprengel Museum Hannover (1994), the SK Stiftung Kultur Köln (1999) and the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg (2008). In 2010, Stephen Shore was awarded the Cultural Prize of the German Society for Photography in Düsseldorf and seven years later his retrospective was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Throughout his career, he has worked with various forms of photography, including automatic and large-format cameras, black-and-white and colour photography, and digital photography and printing. In addition, more than 25 books of his work have been published and his work can now be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Getty Museum (Los Angeles) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), among others. Stephen Shore lives in New York, where he has been head of the photography department at Bard College since 1982.

Stephen Shore in a nutshell

At just 14, Shore managed to sell three photographs. The buyer was the curator of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. At 18, Shore moved to Andy Warhol's Factory, where he documented everyday life, happenings, and much more. His greatest success, however, came at the age of 23 in 1971, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated a solo exhibition to him. Shore was the first living photographer to receive this honor.

One of the defining aspects of Stephen Shore's work is his pioneering use of color photography as a fine art medium. During the 1970s, when black and white photography dominated the art scene, Shore challenged conventions by embracing color as a primary element in his compositions. His careful consideration of color relationships and the vibrant hues present in his photographs added depth and richness to his images. Through his lens, Shore captured the essence of the American landscape and everyday life with a sense of vibrancy and authenticity.

Shore's photographs often adopt a documentary-style approach, capturing the mundane and the ordinary. Yet, within these seemingly commonplace subjects, he unveils narratives that speak volumes about the human experience. Whether it is a roadside diner, a suburban street, or a fleeting moment in time, Shore's ability to find beauty and significance in the everyday is a testament to his unique observational skills. His photographs serve as a visual record, documenting a specific time and place while inviting viewers to reflect on the nuances of the human condition.

Stephen Shore's photographs go beyond mere documentation; they provide a profound exploration of place and time. His extensive travels across America allowed him to capture the distinct character and essence of different regions. From the quiet landscapes of New England to the bustling streets of New York City, Shore's images transport viewers to specific moments and locations, immersing them in the texture and atmosphere of each setting. Through his lens, he invites us to contemplate the evolving nature of society, culture, and the human experience.

Shore's meticulous attention to composition and detail is evident in every frame he captures. His careful arrangements and consideration of visual elements create harmonious and compelling compositions. Whether it is the juxtaposition of colors, the balance of shapes, or the play of light and shadow, Shore's photographs exhibit a remarkable sense of visual harmony. Each image is thoughtfully constructed, drawing the viewer's gaze into the frame and inviting them to explore the intricacies of the scene.

Most of his photographs fetch between $1,000 and $10,000 at auction. About a quarter of his works also fetched prices above $10,000, up to $40,000. This may seem little when one recalls auction results of other famous artists, especially painters. But for photographs, especially in small format, those are pretty high prices.

In January 2023, Shore published the photo book Topographies: Aerial Surveys of the American Landscape. It contains photographs taken with the help of drones. Shore made them during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, he was living in Montana, where most of the images were taken, but he also photographed in Wyoming, Nebraska, New York, and Virginia. The content of the photos are the vast landscapes of America, sometimes interrupted by fences, rivers, roads and pipelines. They are expressions of American Independence, contrasting with the restrictions during the pandemic, in the context of which Shore made the photographs. The high points from which Shore photographs with the drones provide an overview that allows one to see connections instead of myopically focusing only on one's surroundings. In addition, the influence of humans on nature is made visible here. In a sense, Shore is entering new territory compared to his photographs of the 1970s. In those, the focus was on an analysis of a precise time and place and the specific features of different American regions.

Im Januar 2023 veröffentliche Shore das Fotobuch Topographies: Aerial Surveys of the American Landscape.

As a young boy, Shore was given a camera and a darkroom as a gift, and at the age of 10 he was given a book of photographs by the famous Walker Evans. His elegant photographs, characterized by geometric compositions, left a deep impression on Shore, who later became famous for his own compositional talent.

Stephen Shore quotes

»I discovered that this camera was the technical means in photography of communicating what the world looks like in a state of heightened awareness. And it’s that awareness of really looking at the everyday world with clear and focused attention that I’m interested in.«
»I wanted to make pictures that felt natural, that felt like seeing, that didn’t feel like taking something in the world and making a piece of art out of it.«
»Over the years, I’ve been interested in seeing how different cameras open different possibilities. Sometimes picking up a new camera was like seeing the world with fresh eyes.«
»With a painting, you’re taking basic building blocks and making something that’s more complex than what you started with. It is a synthetic process. A photograph does the opposite: It takes the world, and puts an order on it, simplifies it.«
