When Stephen Shore sold three photographs to the then curator of the Museum of Modern Art at the age of 14, his path to becoming an artist was paved. He spent the following years in Andy Warhol's studio The Factory, documenting what went on there. Then, at 23, he had his first solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art - the first photographer to do so since Alfred Stieglitz 40 years earlier.

Born in New York City in 1947, Shore then left his hometown and travelled throughout the USA and Canada. He photographed the contemporary events of the 1970s. "Banal scenes and objects" such as petrol stations, road junctions and housing estates became Shore's trademark, as did colour photography, which was frowned upon from the point of view of artistic photography. Shore's work broke the boundaries of colour photography at the time. In 1977, he took part in documenta 6, and his list of solo exhibitions includes the Whitney Museum in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Hamburg Kunsthalle and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Today, the famous photographer Shore turns 75.
