Gerstenberg Collection, Berlin: »Phantoms of the Night«.

100 years of Nosferatu

People are creeped out by the news that the Nosferatu spider is now spreading to Germany. It almost reads like a PR stunt that its cinematic namesake is celebrating its 100th anniversary this very year. Starting December 16, the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection will encounter the iconic work with the exhibition Phantoms of the Night. 100 Years of Nosferatu – and reveals how the horror film relates to visual art.

As if it had known, the Nosferatu spider made its way to Germany this year - its eight legs filling the summer hole wherever you looked. Thus, it also inculcated a younger generation with the name for a legendary figure, a shudder spread; exactly 100 years after the premiere of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror. In 1922, audiences saw the vampire figure for the first time in the Marble Hall of the Zoological Gardens in Berlin - silent and in black and white, of course. The vampire film adaptation paved the way for the mass horror film genre.

The Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection celebrates the anniversary starting December 16 with the exhibition Phantoms of the Night. 100 Years of Nosferatu. It explores the film's relationship to the visual arts. It is said to have served as a key surrealist work for André Breton. Designs for the Nosferatu set resemble Goya's etchings, works from German Romanticism or the fantastic art and literature of the early 20th century. In addition to names such as Caspar David Friedrich and Alfred Kubin, the exhibition also bridges the gap to contemporary art and everyday culture. The Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection embeds the event in an extensive accompanying program of lectures. As a sidekick, the vampire-savvy public may donate blood under the supervision of the Red Cross on December 21, 2022 and January 12, 2023.
