An American Art Legend in Europe
Artist, performer, composer, filmmaker and author, Laurie Anderson's artistic output is as wide-ranging as few others. The legendary American avant-garde artist now receives her first major exhibition in Europe with Laurie Anderson: Looking into a Mirror Sideways. It will be on view in Stockholm starting April 1.
The Moderna Museet in Stockholm has set itself the task of providing an overview of Laurie Anderson's oeuvre. To this end, they are exhibiting paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, experimental sound recordings, films, video art and artworks created with the help of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. But that's not all: visitors must also keep in mind Anderson's performances of the 1970s, which made her famous, in order to understand the diversity of her oeuvre. Laurie Anderson: Looking into a Mirror Sideways honors Anderson's experimental joy and once again highlights the importance of adopting new perspectives and questioning existing structures.
Laurie Anderson was born in 1947 and grew up near Chicago, Illinois. In the 1960s she studied with Sol LeWitt in New York and within a few years developed into an influential avant-garde artist. Her performances earned her legendary status in the United States. In Sweden, from where Anderson's grandfather once emigrated, her first major European solo exhibition is now taking place. Apart from her participation in documenta 6 and documenta 8 (1977 and 1987), her reception in Europe has been comparatively limited.
