On 16 October 2021, the Cleveland Museum of Art will open Picturing Motherhood Now - a group exhibition featuring works by 34 diverse contemporary artists who aim to re-explore the possibilities of representing motherhood. Until 03 March 2022, viewers will be able to see the cross-media works that draw on a range of feminisms and challenge familiar archetypes of motherhood by approaching motherhood as a multi-layered concept. The artists on display in Picturing Motherhood Now use motherhood as a lens through which to examine contemporary social issues - such as changing definitions of family and gender, the history and afterlife of slavery, the legacy of migration and the preservation of matrilineal indigenous cultures.
Picturing Motherhood Now, is one of the Cleveland Museum of Art's first large-scale contemporary group exhibitions in many years. The exhibition focuses on the art of the last two decades, while integrating works by significant pioneers to tell an intergenerational and evolving story of motherhood. Artists on display include Louise Bourgeois, Alison Saar, Mequitta Ahuja, Aliza Nisenbaum, Carolina Caycedo, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Firelei Báez.
