Federico Fellini: film director and indefatigable cartoonist

A director with roots in caricature drawing: This was Federico Fellini. The Kunsthaus Zürich shows that the two disciplines can work hand in hand from July 1 in Federico Fellini. From Drawing to Film.

Federico Fellini (1920-1993) is considered one of the most important directors in film history. Productions such as La strada (1954), La dolce vita (1960), Amarcord (1973) and Città delle donne (1980) were penned by him. In addition to his pioneering role as a director, he also appeared as a tireless draftsman since his youth. His special style, peppered with caricatural elements and at some points almost reaching the grotesque, goes back to his earlier work as a caricaturist and inventor of humorous drawings for newspapers.

Starting July 1, the Kunsthaus Zurich explores in the exhibition Federico Fellini. From Drawing to Film how Fellini turned his ideas first into drawings before transforming them into films. More than 500 exhibits allow visitors to experience this process. They are drawn from important private collections and embody not only the drawings but also film clips, real props and set photographs. One of the most relevant collections is that of the Keel family, with whom Fellini had a close bond. Parts of the collection remained hidden from the public until today. The Museum Folkwang in Essen presented the exhibition earlier this year. However, a visit is also worthwhile for those who have already seen it: The Kunsthaus Zürich is adding 40 additional loans to the selection.
