Förderverein Zeller Kunstwege shows Marianne Hopf

Moments of moving landscapes

From black and white to color explosions: Marianne Hopf is showing pictures from travel grants to Iceland and Damnatz on the Elbe in an exhibition organized by the Förderverein Zeller Kunstwege. The artist deals with the landscape as a visual experience and as a space in motion. The vernissage will take place on May 22 at 7 pm in Zell am Harmersbach.

The exhibition Marianne Hopf. Painting brings together the perceptual experiences of very different landscapes: the artist presents works created during her travel grants in Iceland and Damnatz on the Elbe. The main theme of her artistic work is the landscape, understood as a constantly changing space, moved by indomitable forces, and how the landscape is seen and perceived: »For years, I have been dealing with the landscape as a painterly act, beyond the contrast between figuration and abstraction. Here, the landscape as an event and seeing as an event are pushed into one another. The view then presents itself as a moment of perception«, explains Hopf. Her current exhibition, organized by the Förderverein Zeller Kunstwege together with the town of Zell, opens on 22 May at 7 pm in the Rundofen in Zell am Harmersbach. It will then run until June 22. Art historian Dr. Susanne Ließegang, who has accompanied Hopf on a number of trips, will speak at the opening. The artist will be present in person at the vernissage and on Saturdays during the exhibition period.

Under the impressions of her first trip to Iceland in 2016, Marianne Hopf reduced her color palette to black and white in the series Cosmic Earth, inspired by the cold, the snow and the incomparable movements and superimpositions of the northern lights. During another stay on the island, she focused on the fjords, the barren land and the impressive mountain landscapes in a wider range of colors. At the end of 2024, Hopf gathered completely different impressions in Damnatz on the Elbe: fascinated by the reflections in the river landscape and the huge flocks of birds that were there around the clock, new experiences unfolded: »They were explosions of color, they were doubled by the reflection and only separated by a narrow line. [...] It was a real spectacle for the eye.« You can read more about her stay in Damnatz in our interview with the artist.

Marianne Hopf lives and works in Lahr in the Black Forest and in Berlin. Emilio Vedova (1919-2006), whom she met personally in his studio in Venice, had a lasting influence on her work. For many years, she has presented her works of art nationally and internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including several participations in NordArt in Büdelsdorf.
