As one of the most important and most expensive artists of the 21st century, Gerhard Richter attains a status during his lifetime that many artists only achieve after their death. Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932 - he experienced all of recent German history and incorporated his experiences into his artworks.
Shortly before the end of the war, the adolescent is drafted by the Wehrmacht and returns to his family after American captivity. He lives in his hometown until the early 1960s and outwardly blends into the image of the GDR: The young Richter is able to attend the local art academy and is commissioned to paint a mural in the Dresden Hygiene Museum while still a student.
On 17 June 1953, the budding artist finally witnesses the uprisings against the government, and the state restrictions that affect his artistic existence increasingly get to him. In 1961, the young artist finally fled the GDR to settle in Düsseldorf. Arriving in the Rhineland, he takes up further studies at the Kunsthochschule despite the degree he had already obtained in Dresden - later becoming a professor himself at the renowned Düsseldorf Kunstakademie.
During his studies he switched to the class of Karl Otto Götz and made contact with Konrad Fischer (née Lueg), a contact that was groundbreaking for him. In his phase of discovery, he feverishly tried his hand at various art movements - including Informel and Fluxus. According to his own statement, Richter later burned some of the works from this experimental phase in the courtyard of the art academy.
Richter was the talk of the town with his cycle 18 October 1977 from 1988 - alienated black and white photographs based on police and press photos of the night of the Stammheim deaths. The pictures with titles like Dead, Hanged, Shot or Confrontation were bought by the MoMa in New York in 1995 for 3 million US dollars.
In a very similar way, he produced his 2005 work September, which deals with the attacks on the World Trade Center. Since the turn of the millennium, he has focused mainly on abstract art - his productivity has never diminished even with increasing age.

Als einer der bedeutendsten und teuersten Künstler des 21. Jahrhunderts erfährt Gerhard Richter noch zu Lebzeiten einen Status, der vielen Kunstschaffenden erst nach ihrem Tode zukommt. Gerhard Richter wird 1932 in Dresden geboren – er erlebt die gesamte neuere deutsche Geschichte und nimmt die Erlebnisse mit in seine künstlerische Laufbahn: Kurz vor Kriegsende wird der Heranwachsende von der Wehrmacht eingezogen und kehrt nach amerikanischer Gefangenschaft zurück zu seiner Familie. Er lebt bis zum Beginn der 1960er Jahre in seiner Heimatstadt und fügt sich nach außen hin in das Bild der DDR ein.
Der junge Richter kann die örtliche Kunstakademie besuchen und erhält noch während des Studiums den Auftrag für ein Wandbild im Dresdener Hygienemuseum. Am 17. Juni 1953 nimmt der angehende Künstler schließlich an den Aufständen gegen die Regierung teil: Die staatlichen Restriktionen, die sich auf sein Künstlerdasein auswirken, machen ihm zunehmend zu schaffen. 1961 flüchtet der junge Künstler schließlich aus der DDR, um sich in Düsseldorf niederzulassen. Im Rheinland angekommen, nimmt er trotz seines Abschlusses, den er bereits in Dresden erworben hatte, ein weiteres Studium an der Kunsthochschule auf – später wird er selbst als Professor an der renommierten Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie tätig.
Er wechselt während der Studienzeit in die Klasse von Karl Otto Götz und knüpft den für ihn wegweisenden Kontakt zu Konrad Fischer (geb. Lueg). Er probiert sich in seiner Findungsphase fieberhaft in verschiedenen Kunstrichtungen – so mitunter im Informel oder dem Fluxus. Laut eigener Aussage soll Richter einige Werke aus dieser Experimentierphase im Hof der Kunstakademie später verbrannt haben.
In aller Munde war Richter in den 1980er-Jahren mit seinem Zyklus 18. Oktober 1977 – er zeigt verfremdete Schwarzweißaufnahmen, die auf Polizei- und Pressefotos der Todesnacht von Stammheim basieren. Die Bilder mit Titeln wie Tote, Erhängte, Erschossener oder Gegenüberstellung wurden 1995 vom MoMa in New York für 3 Millionen US-Dollar aufgekauft. Auf eine sehr ähnliche Weise fertigt er 2005 sein Werk September, das die Anschläge auf das World Trade Center zum Thema hat. Seit der Jahrtausendwende fokussiert er sich hauptsächlich auf abstrakte Kunst – seine Produktivität hat selbst mit zunehmendem Alter nie nachgelassen.
