The artist Raymond Pettibon

  • Contemporary US artist.
  • Known for his works combining stylised ink drawings or iconography with texts.
  • Married to the artist Aïda Ruilova.

US artist Raymond Pettibon was originally born Raymond Ginn on 16 June 1957 in Tucson, Arizona, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine arts in 1977 after studying economics. A year later, through his older brother's record company, he started publishing artist's notebooks and became known in the Southern Californian punk rock scene in the early 1980s for designing posters and record covers for music groups on the same record company. In particular, covers and flyers for the punk bands Black Flag and Firehose increasingly raised his profile and he adopted his stage name, Pettibon. This derives from the nickname petit bon, which his father had given him.

During this period, his works were shown in the first group exhibitions, and in 1986 his first solo exhibition was held in New York. In 1990, Pettibon designed both the record cover and the booklet of the album Goo by the band Sonic Youth and thus provided motifs for a large number of T-shirts and posters. As the 1990s progressed, Pettibon's work was exhibited first nationally, then internationally, including at the Whitney Biennial (New York City), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), Kunsthaus (Zurich) and Tramway arts centre (Glasgow).

In 2001 he was awarded the Wolfgang Hahn Prize, followed by participation in Documenta 11 in Kassel (2002) and other awards, including the Bucksbaum Award of the Whitney Biennial and the Oskar Kokoschka Prize of the Austrian Federal Government. In 2013, he designed a billboard for New York's High Line that depicted a 2010 baseball drawing titled No Title (Safe he called ...) and baseball player Jackie Robinson.

In 2017, a retrospective of his work entitled A Pen of All Work was shown at the New Museum (New York City). His work can now be found in the collections of various galleries and museums, including the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City) and the Tate Gallery of Modern Art (London). Raymond Pettibon is married to the artist Aïda Ruilova and lives both in Hermosa Beach (Los Angeles) and New York.

Raymond Pettibon is considered a self-taught artist who claims to have been strongly influenced by the work of artists William Blake, Edward Hopper and Francisco de Goya. He became known for his stylised ink drawings as well as his use of US iconography drawn from literature, art history, philosophy and religion, politics, sports and sexuality. His comic-like drawings contain both image and text, the latter often formulated in a disturbing, ironic or ambiguous manner and primarily aimed at exercising cultural criticism.

At the beginning of his career, Pettibon worked mainly with ink on paper, and many of his early drawings were also in black and white. Only occasionally did he add colour with the help of pencils, watercolours and acrylics, collages or gouache. In the mid-1980s, he increasingly made collages using simple newspaper prints. In addition to his works on paper, Pettibon also created animations and live-action films from his drawings, as well as fanzines, prints and large murals. The latter often included an arrangement of his own works on paper, so that the paintings almost seemed like installations created from collages.

2017 wurde im New Museum (New York City) eine Retrospektive seiner Arbeiten mit dem Titel A Pen of All Work gezeigt.

Raymond Pettibon in a nutshell

Yes, the artist was born Raymond Ginn in 1957. When he designed posters and graphics for Black Flag, his brother's punk rock band, in the mid-1970s, he adopted the name Pettibon. This derives from the nickname petit bon (good little one), as his father called him when he was a child. Pettibon's most famous design from that time is the so-called four bars logo of the band Black Flag, which made him famous in the punk scene in Los Angeles and laid the foundation for his artistic career.

At the center of Pettibon's art is his mastery of drawing. His bold, gestural lines and spontaneous marks give his works a sense of immediacy and urgency. Whether depicting figures, landscapes, or abstract forms, his drawings possess an undeniable energy that draws the viewer into his artistic universe. Pettibon's ability to convey complex emotions and narratives through his deceptively simple drawings demonstrates his artistic skill.

Pettibon's handwritten or printed text often accompanies his drawings, serving as commentary, titles, or independent elements within the composition. The juxtaposition of image and text creates a dynamic interplay that invites the viewer to engage in a dialogue between word and image. Pettibon's texts provide social and cultural commentary, explore existential themes, and challenge conventional norms, adding an intellectual and conceptual dimension to his art.

Pettibon's art often incorporates references to popular culture, mass media, and historical iconography. He appropriates images from comic books, films, literature, and art history, recontextualizing them to challenge established narratives and ideologies. His reinterpretation of cultural symbols and icons creates a subversive and often satirical commentary on contemporary society. Through his art, Pettibon encourages viewers to question the authority and meaning behind widely accepted cultural icons and narratives.

Pettibon's art reflects a keen awareness of socio-political issues and a willingness to engage with them. His works touch upon themes such as power dynamics, violence, war, and social injustice. Through his drawings and text, he offers a critical perspective on societal norms and the human condition. Pettibon's art provokes thought, sparks conversation, and challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about the world we live in.

In addition to various covers of the band Black Flag, Pettibon designed, among others, One by One (2002) by the Foo Fighters, Paranoid Time (1980) and What Makes a Man Start Fires? (1983) by Minutemen and Ball-Hog or Tugboat? (1995) by Mike Watt.

The artistic breakthrough came in the early 1990s, when Pettibon achieved greater reach by participating in group exhibitions at notable museums. This began in 1992 with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles with Helter Skelter: L.A. Art in the 1990s and participation in the Whitney Biennial in 1993 and 1997. In 1995, Pettibon had his first major solo exhibition at the David Zwirner Gallery and at the same time his first solo museum show at the Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland.

The artist is also a lyricist and singer. In 2007, together with the German composer and producer Oliver Augst, he realized the musical The Whole World is Watching, which was shown in Berlin. It was created as part of the MaerzMusik Festival.

In 2004, Pettibon won the Bucksbaum Award, the art prize with the world's highest prize money of $100,000. The prize was first handed out in 2000 and was awarded every two years until 2014. Since then, there has been another winner in 2019 and one in 2022. The award is given to artists who have the potential to leave a lasting mark on the history of American art. Other awardees include Paul Pfeiffer (2000), Mark Bradford (2006), and Zoe Leonard (2014).

Raymond Pettibon quotes

»I don't want to express violence or anger or hate in my art. I want to express forgiveness.«
»It was never my goal to capitalize on punk. I could never make it as a commercial artist. I didn't back then and I still don't have the temperament and don't care for drawing or painting or making art for any other purposes other my own.«
»There are lots of guns and action in my drawings, and part of that is just to make them more interesting. Because you can go through a whole film and it's mostly talking heads and little else until the action scenes, and they're usually violence or physical stuff. Same with baseball, or any sport. Except I find pitching and batting are visually very striking.«
»No one can help me with my work. I think I do best when I am just left alone.«
»I don't make art with grandiose delusions. I do know there are limits to what art is capable of. That makes it all the more appealing to me. And I can do as I will whenever I choose.«
