The artist Sean Scully

  • Irish-American painter of minimalism.
  • His abstracts are based on geometric compositions of stripes, bars and contrasting colours.
  • From 2002 to 2007 he held a guest professorship at the Fine Arts Academy in Munich.

Sean Scully, born 30.06.1945 in Dublin, is an Irish-American painter of minimalism. Scully's work is characterised by abstracted, geometric forms, which he often combines into chessboard-like patterns. Scully's well-known visual aesthetic is primarily characterised by compositions of broad bars and narrower stripes - these he positions parallel to each other, sometimes running horizontally, sometimes vertically and rarely diagonally. His impasto colours present themselves in an interplay of warm red and brown tones as well as grey and white.

The stripes forming a square each form a colour unit and thus contrast with the adjacent field. New York's street canyons, industrial buildings and the light falling on them served as models for the shapes. Scully was also inspired by popular Minimalism and his friendship with Robert Ryman. Later, Scully also produced three-dimensional paintings and sculptures (e.g. Floating Paintings, 1995) that follow his familiar visual language. Scully studied at Croydon College of Art in London from 1965 to 1973.

Two years later, with the Harkness Scholarship in his pocket, he moved to New York, where his works were first shown in a solo exhibition at the Duffy-Gibbs Gallery in 1977. In 1983, Scully became a US citizen. In 1989 and 1993 he was nominated for the British Turner Prize, but did not win it. From 2002 to 2007, he held a guest professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich - it came about in view of his high reputation in the Bavarian city and the then director Ben Willikens.

Today, Scully lives in New York, among other places, and occasionally changes his place of residence between different European cities. Scully has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, with venues including the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris, the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt and the Mary Boone Gallery in New York. In 2001, the Haus der Kunst in Munich and in November 2006, the Metropolitan Museum of Arts each dedicated a retrospective to him.

Heute lebt Scully u. a. in New York und wechselt seinen Wohnort zeitweilig zwischen verschiedenen europäischen Städten.
