»Flirt and Fantasy«

It's all about stories with loose ends, dreams, visions, and transformation: The Kunsthalle Bremen is focusing on the creative diversity and independence of printmaking. Flirt and Fantasy: Griffelkunst from Max Klinger to Peter Doig opens on November 12. At the same time, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is showing a related exhibition, And so on to infinity. 100 Years of Griffelkunst.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg e. V. (Hamburg Printmaking Association), the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Hamburger Kunsthalle are showing comprehensive exhibitions of printmaking works. This globally unique printmaking association was founded by the educator Johannes Böse. He adopted the term »Griffelkunst« from art theory treatises by Max Klinger (1857-1920): the painter, sculptor, and graphic artist was convinced of the radically new conception of art and the artistic potential of drawings and printmaking, which he sought to liberate from their dependence on painting. The Kunsthalle Bremen is celebrating the anniversary with the exhibition Flirt and Fantasy. Griffelkunst from Max Klinger to Peter Doig, which features around 65 works by Franz Burkhardt, Marcel van Eeden, Peter Doig, Asana Fujikawa, Wenzel Hablik, Anna Haifisch, Max Klinger, Yves Netzhammer, Paul Nougé, Nedko Solakov, Emma Talbot, and Heinrich Vogeler will be on display. Previously unpublished works and test prints will also be on view. The exhibition runs from November 12, 2025, to March 1, 2026.

The Hamburger Kunsthalle also organized an exhibition to mark the anniversary: And so on to infinity. 100 Years of Griffelkunst opened on November 7, 2025, and will run until January 18, 2026. The museum is showing an extensive selection of lithographs, screen prints, etchings, woodcuts, photographs, C-prints, and supplementary archival documents. Works by Ulla von Brandenburg, Dan Graham, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Dieter Roth, Nancy Spero, and Rosemarie Trockel, among others, are on display in Hamburg.

The works of art by Klinger and Doig shown here are on display in Bremen.Art.Salon
