Dresden: Installation by Henning Haupt in St. Luke's Church

Magenta as a spatial concept(?)

Color space construction in St. Luke's Church in Dresden: The artist Henning Haupt examines the relationship between space and painting with his installation of cutouts (knife cuts) of color applications on paper. Five Sets of Magenta and Space can be seen from June 15 to July 3. As part of the Long Night of Science, the church will be open until 11 pm on June 20.

Church interiors are extraordinary places – above all because of their architecture, which is oriented towards meaning, design and atmosphere. The St. Luke's Church in Dresden now offers something truly special: the installation Five Sets of Magenta and Space, consisting of large painted knife cuts, creates a new space and unusual demarcations or extensions within the church interior, which is rethought as a construct in this context. The five pictures by artist Henning Haupt, painted in oil on paper, are each composed of four to ten parts. They form an interior space in the church, which can be seen from the outside as a white, fragile paper wall and which complements and questions the current meaning and use of the church. The construction is a further development of an installation that was shown in Amherst, Massachusetts in 2023. Five Sets of Magenta and Space will be on display at St. Luke's Church in Dresden from June 15 to July 3. On June 20, during the Long Night of Science, it will be on display in addition to the usual opening hours from 5 to 11 pm.

The artist Henning Haupt's work is dedicated to the relationship between color spaces and three-dimensional spaces constructed by humans. An architect by training, he completed his doctorate in engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 2009. After more than ten years in the USA, he has lived in Dresden since 2020, where he is Professor of Design at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Dresden. His work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including in New York and Miami. In the USA, there are also several large-format murals by the artist in public spaces, including in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood in Florida.
