Designed in a rather minimalist architectural language typical of Chipperfield, the content of the extension will primarily house art from the 1960s onwards as well as changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Especially the abundance of parallel currents and the variety of artistic media used in the second half of the 20th century will be comprehensively conveyed here. A novelty is the Digital Lab, a digitally mirrored room specially designed for artworks and performances that address the virtual world. The first exhibition there is called »Earth Beasts. Nature Image in Transition«.
But to put this wealth of meaning in historical context, galleries are also set up for 19th-century painting and classical modernism. The Kunsthaus Zürich also uses the new building to supplement important art epochs. The Knecht Collection expands the works of 17th-century Dutch painting, while paintings from the collection of the controversial arms manufacturer Emil Bührle, who died in 1956, significantly complement the paintings of French Impressionism.
For the purpose of art education, studios are available for groups of visitors and students. New stores, a banqueting hall and a peaceful garden, which is also suitable for events, complete the concept of a modern museum. In 2022, works by Niki de Saint Phalle will be exhibited in the garden. The now largest art museum in Switzerland invites to the opening of the new building on October 09 and 10 for an open day with free admission.
