The Bronx Museum in New York is finally giving Darrel Ellis' (1958 - 1992) lost vision of Black self-image and domesticity the space it deserves beginning May 24 - Darrel Ellis: Regeneration is the artist's first comprehensive and scholarly survey exhibition. His work had challenged curators and scholars alike for thirty years. At the age of 33, the young man succumbed to AIDS, leaving behind an unfinished body of work.
While Ellis was still alive, his work was already featured in important contemporary exhibitions-such as Witnesses: Against Their Vanishing, organized by Nan Goldin. Ellis skillfully fused painting, printmaking, and photography - sparking current artistic interest in archives, (cultural) appropriation, and personal narratives. For three months, those interested can view the unfinished, challenging life's work of the artist who died much too soon. The Bronx Museum is co-organizing the exhibition with the Baltimore Museum of Art.
