The artist Helen Frankenthaler

  • US-American artist of abstract expressionism and colour field painting.
  • Her painting technique was inspired by Pollock's Action Painting.
  • Taught at Yale University in New Haven until the end of the 1980s.

Helen Frankenthaler, born 12 December 1928 in New York City, died 27 December 2011 in Darien, Connecticut, was an American artist of colour field painting and abstract expressionism.
Frankenthaler primarily used oil for her well-known stain method, which was artfully reminiscent of ink and watercolour drawings. Early on, she was inspired by avant-garde artists such as Jackson Pollock and therefore proceeded in the same way as with action painting: She laid the canvas on the floor and let the paint run over it. Her most important work Moutain and Sea (1952) was also created in this way.

Later, she is said to have convinced the two artists Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland of the technique as well - both were among her circle of acquaintances at the height of her creative period and served as a source of inspiration for her at the beginning of her career. Stylistically, Frankenthaler's works are regarded as border crossers between the abstract expressionism of the 1950s and the colour field painting of the 1960s. The artist grew up in New York as the daughter of Supreme Court Judge Alfred Frankenthaler. From the age of 17, the well-off young woman took private painting lessons at the Dalton School with the renowned Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo.

In 1946 she attended Bennington College in Vermont, after which she studied at the Educational Institute of the Art Students League of New York until 1949. From 1950, she again studied privately with the painter and art professor Hans Hofmann. In addition, she studied art history at Columbia University with the well-known art historian Meyer Schapiro. At the end of the decade she came into contact with important representatives of New York avant-garde art such as Jackson Pollock or Robert Motherwell, her later husband.

Later, Frankenthaler herself received a teaching position at Yale University in New Haven, which she held until the end of the 1980s. In the course of her life, the abstract artist was elected a member of various honorary societies and associations: in 1974 she became part of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, in 1991 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1994 of the National Academy of Design. Frankenthaler died on 27 December 2011, two weeks after her 83rd birthday, in Darien, Conneticut.

Helen Frankenthaler, geb. 12.12.1928 in New York City, gest.

Geburtstag, in Darien, Conneticut.
