The artist Mary Heilmann

  • Counts among the most influential abstract painters of her generation.
  • Is represented in numerous international collections.
  • Her paintings combine the linearity of geometric forms with a playful painting style.

Mary Heilmann was born in San Francisco in 1940. At the age of 19, she began studying literature at the University of California in Santa Barbara. In 1963, an excursion in poetics and ceramics followed at San Francisco State University, before she began her Master's degree in ceramics and sculpture at Berkeley in the same year. It was not until she moved to New York in 1968 that she devoted herself to the painting for which she became known.

Heilmann's abstract painterly works are reminiscent of modernist art and, as she herself says, move between the precision of Josef Albers and the expressiveness of a Willem de Kooning: while lines become grids that form colour fields and geometric shapes compose the picture, Heilmann maintains a playful approach to colour and form. Although the artist sketches her paintings digitally beforehand, it is the painterly moments of fading colour edges and visible brushstrokes that make her works interesting.

Unlike some modern artists, Heilmann does not pursue the goal of dematerialisation and a pure self-referentiality of painting: in her

works, the artist refers to memories, music or dreams, among other things. She cites cartoons as a major inspiration; she particularly admires the colour design of the television series The Simpsons. Her works also quote other artists such as Ellsworth Kelly or Piet Mondrian, the latter for example in the works Little Mondrian (1985) and Manhattan Shuffle (1986). Heilmann sometimes presents her paintings on chairs and benches she has built herself, thus inviting the viewers to interact. In addition to paintings and furniture, she also makes ceramics.

Initially, Heilmann found recognition primarily among other artists; her first solo show opened in 1970 at the Whitney Museum Art Resource Center. Many exhibitions followed, including the retrospective How To Be Someone at the New Museum in New York, which gave her renewed prominence in 2009. Today, works by her are in the collections of MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Heilmann lives and works in New York.

Viele Ausstellungen folgten, darunter auch die Retrospektive How To Be Someone im New Museum in New York, die 2009 ihrer Bekanntheit erneut Antrieb verlieh. Heilmann lebt und arbeitet in New York.
