The artist Louise Nevelson

  • US sculptor and painter of Ukrainian origin who focused on the production of assemblages.
  • She was strongly influenced by the cubist style of Hans Hofmann as her master.
  • Louise Nevelson Plaza in Lower Manhattan was named after her.

Louise Nevelson, born 23.09.1899 in Perejaslaw, Russian Empire, as Leah Berliawsky, died 17.04.1988 in New York, was an American sculptor and painter known for her Cubist assemblages. Nevelson's works show clear signs of her cubist influence. Numerous assemblages, sculptures and ceramic works are what make her oeuvre so unique. She liked to combine furniture fragments with other wooden parts to form panels or columns and cover them monochrome in black, white or gold paint. Her figure group consisting of 15 Moving-Static-Moving-Figures is also considered a central work – a terracotta work series from 1945.

At the time of its creation, Nevelson was primarily devoted to her ceramic works. Nevelson emigrated with her family from Pereyaslav, southeast of Kiev, to the USA in 1905, after her father had already preceded the family in 1902. She grew up in the tranquil town of Rockland in the state of Maine and studied painting and sculpture at an art school in Augusta, Georgia, from 1918. In 1920 she moved to New York with her husband, where she resumed her studies at the Art Students League of New York in 1929.

Two years later, after her divorce, she went to Munich to continue her studies with Fauvist and Cubist Hans Hofmann. From this point on, her artistic career took off – she worked regularly with her master as well as with Diego Rivera and Stanley William Hayter. In 1941, her works were exhibited solo for the first time at the Karl Nierendorf Gallery in New York. For two years, Nevelon's work was shown alongside that of artists such as Frida Kahlo, Meret Oppenheim and Dorothea Tanning at the Art of This Century Gallery, directed by Peggy Guggenheim.

Nevelson's life's work was appreciated with the naming of Louise Nevelson Plaza in Lower Manhattan – an honour she was the first living artist to receive. She was also awarded membership by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1968 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1973. The artist died in 1988 at the age of 88. Today, her works are represented internationally in over 90 different collections.

Louise Nevelson, geb.
