Robert Peter Mangold, born on 12.10.1937 in North Tonawanda, New York, is a well-known representative of Minimalism, whose style is inspired by artists such as Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline. He describes himself as a »picture maker« and uses this to illustrate the contradictory relationship between clarity, precision and playful lightness in his art.
As a child, Mangold already aspired to a creative career as an illustrator. In 1961, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Yale University in New Haven. In the same year he moved to New York, where he worked as a supervisor at the Museum of Modern Art and dealt extensively with the artists exhibited there.
In 1964, a year after earning his Masters of Fine Arts, his works were exhibited for the first time in a solo show. Mangold's experimental phase was short and so he found his typical geometric, minimalist style as early as the 1960s. In 1971, the Guggenheim Museum in New York showed his work in a solo show.
Subsequently, his paintings were also exhibited internationally in cities such as London, Milan and Paris. Mangold took part in documenta 5 (1972), documenta 6 (1977) and documenta 7 (1982) and thus advanced to become an internationally recognised artist, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. His spouse Sylvia Plimack Mangold is also artist.

Robert Peter Mangold, geb. am 12.10.1937 in North Tonawanda, New York, gilt als bekannter Vertreter des Minimalismus, dessen Stil sich an Größen wie Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock und Franz Kline orientiert. Er selbst bezeichnet sich als »Bildermacher« und nutzt dies als Beschreibung des widersprüchlichen Verhältnisses zwischen Klarheit, Präzision und spielerischer Leichtigkeit seiner Kunst.
Bereits als Kind strebte Mangold eine kreative Karriere als Illustrator an. 1961 erwarb er seinen Bachelor of Fine Arts an der Yale University in New Haven. 1961 folgte sein Umzug nach New York, wo er als Aufseher im Museum of Modern Art arbeitete und sich ausgiebig mit den dort ausgestellten Künstlern befasste.
1964, ein Jahr nach dem Erlangen seines Masters of Fine Arts, wurden seine Werke erstmals im Rahmen einer Einzelschau ausgestellt. Mangolds Experimentierphase war kurz und so fand er bereits in den 1960er-Jahren zu seinem heute typischen geometrischen, minimalistischen Stil. 1971 widmete ihm das Guggenheim Museum in New York eine Einzelschau.
Anschließend waren seine Gemälde auch auf internationaler Ebene in Städten wie London, Mailand und Paris zu sehen. Mangold nahm an der documenta 5 (1972), der documenta 6 (1977) und der documenta 7 (1982) teil und avancierte so vor allem in den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren zu einem international anerkannten Künstler. Auch seine Ehepartnerin Sylvia Plimack Mangold ist Künstlerin.
