The artist Wayne Thiebaud

  • US painter and important representative of Pop Art.
  • Known for his still lifes of everyday objects and his landscape paintings.
  • Often uses heavy pigment and exuberant colours in his works.

Born on 15.11.1920 in Mesa (Arizona), the painter Morton Wayne Thiebaud, commonly Wayne Thiebaud in short, showed an interest in art at an early age: in high school he caricatured his schoolmates and teachers in drawing class. In 1936 he worked in the cartoon department of the Walt Disney Studios during the summer holidays and from 1938 to 1949 he worked as a commercial artist and cartoonist in California and New York. In 1949 he began studying art, which he completed with a Master's degree in 1952. From 1951 he worked for ten years as a lecturer at Sacramanto City College, where Mel Ramos and Fritz Scholder were among his students.

During a stay in New York from 1956 to 1957, Thiebaud met Willem de Kooning and Elaine de Kooning as well as Franz Kline - they as well as the artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns significantly influenced Thiebaud in his work. In 1960, his first solo exhibition took place at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Two years later, his works were part of one of the first Pop Art exhibitions in America, together with those of artists such as Andy Warhol, Edward Ruscha, Jim Dine, Robert Dowd and Roy Lichtenstein.

In 1967, his work was shown at the Biennale Internationale, and in 1972 at Documenta 5 in Kassel. In 1994, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, a major US award for artists and arts supporters. In 2001, he also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Art from what is now the National Academy. In 2010, he designed a so-called Google Doodle on the occasion of the twelfth birthday of the Google search engine. Thiebaud died on December 25, 2021 proud age of 101.

Artistically, Wayne Thiebaud was best known for his still lifes. He mainly depicted everyday objects such as paint pots and lipsticks or foodstuffs such as cakes, desserts, ice cream cones or hot dogs in an illustrative style - he was often compared to Jean Siméon Chardin or Giorgio Morandi because of his still lifes. In addition, he also painted landscapes and devoted himself to figure painting, which is said to be influenced by the work of Richard Diebenkorn. Because of his interest in objects of mass culture, he is often attributed to Pop Art, although his early works predate classical Pop Art somewhat and he never considered himself to belong to this style. Thiebaud uses heavy pigment and exuberant colours in his works to depict his images.
