Icons of 20th-century art history that are not only well known among experts include Andy Warhol's color print of Marilyn Monroe and Roy Lichtenstein's Modern Painting with Black Sun - the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (S.M.A.K.) will be showing these archetypal representatives of Pop Art in the exhibition POP ART From Warhol to Panamarenko starting November 27. It marks the beginning of a long-term, close collaboration with the Matthys-Colle Foundation, as it is largely fed by permanent loans from the Matthys-Colle private collection. However, the forty exhibits also contain works from the museum's own collection. The artists on display include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, Panamarenko, Martial Raysse, Christo, Jean Tinguely, Marcel Broodthaers, Konrad Klapheck, Yves Klein, Claes Oldenburg, Arman, and Gerhard Richter. Thus, POP ART From Warhol to Panamarenko focuses primarily on the key period of the style, spanning the two decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Through May 8, 2022, interested visitors can view the exhibition of high-profile Pop Art classics.

The Matthys-Colle private collection of Belgian couple Roger and Hilda Matthys-Colle is so important to the S.M.A.K. because it has managed a number of the artworks in it since 2020. The Matthys-Colles collected art for most of the second half of the twentieth century, with an emphasis on artistic innovation. Roger Matthys was a co-founder of the Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (V.M.H.K.), the forerunner of the Friends of the S.M.A.K., established in 1957.Art.Salon
