The artist Barbara Kruger

  • Contemporary conceptual artist from the USA, lives and works in NY and LA.
  • Known for large-scale works in which she combines image and writing.
  • Considered a significant pioneer in the field of conceptual art.

U.S. born Barbara Kruger is best known for her large-format posters and installations, in which she combines image and writing. The artist, who is considered a pioneer of conceptual art, was born on January 26, 1945 in Newark (New Jersey). She first studied at Syracuse University in 1964 and then transferred to Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1966. Here she studied under US photographer and photojournalist Diane Arbus, among others. That same year, she joined Condé Nast Publishing and shortly thereafter began working as a picture editor at Mademoiselle, where she rose to head of picture editing within a year. After that, she worked for various publications as a picture editor as well as a graphic designer.

She created her first artworks in 1969, and four years later participated in the Whitney Biennial. Throughout the 1970s, she had several solo exhibitions in various locations within New York. In 1980 Kruger received a P, S. 1 grant and she established herself as an artist by participating in international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta 7 (1982) in Kassel. She turned to fine art in the late 1980s and exhibited her first installation in 1991. Over the years, Kruger has been a lecturer at various U.S. academic institutions, including the California Institute of the Arts (Los Angeles) and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Today, the artist lives in New York and Los Angeles and pursues a teaching career at the University of California.

In her work, Kruger critically and wittily engages with contemporary culture. In it, she explores stereotypes, engages with consumer society, exerts feminist cultural critique, and questions hierarchies of power and control. She often relies on her familiar combination of figurative and written language, with the sentences used tending to be short and confrontational. For the letters, Kruger uses the colors black, white, or red. She usually applies these to the background of her works as well, although sometimes it consists of images from the mass media.

Kruger's work has been on view to date at the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography (both in New York), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the National Gallery of Art (Washington), Kunsthalle Basel, and the Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich), among others.

Januar 1945 in Newark (New Jersey) geboren.
