The artist Carroll Dunham

  • Contemporary US artist who creates paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, to name a few.
  • His work shows references to Surrealism and Action Painting, Abstract Painting and Pop Art.
  • Married to the artist and photographer Laurie Simmons.

Carroll Dunham, born on 5 November 1949 in New Haven (Connecticut), is an American artist who focuses on painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and sculpture. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and then moved to New York. There he worked as an assistant to the painter Dorothea Rockburne, as a graphic artist at Time Magazine and finally as a teacher at Columbia University. Since the early 1980s, he has developed a concise formal language within his art, which is recognisable in all his works and which he continues to develop.

In 2002, the New Museum in New York City showed his retrospective, which was also exhibited at Millesgården in Stockholm in 2008. Dunham has been represented at a number of Whitney Biennials and received the Skowhegan Medal for Painting in 2004. His work can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York City), the Tate Gallery (London) and the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), among others. Dunham is married to the artist and photographer Laurie Simmons, they both live and work in New York.

Dunham's artwork refers in various ways to artists such as Arshile Gorky, Philip Guston, Paul Gauguin and to comics by R. Crumb. In addition, his work references surrealism and action painting as well as abstract painting and pop art. With a unique stylisation of the human figure, Dunham playfully and crudely explores the tropes and traditions of painting.

His themes run through various media, processing and varying the same motifs in drawing, printmaking and painting. Here, sexual references play an important role: they run through Dunham's entire oeuvre. In early 2000, for example, he developed a character with a nose in the shape of a phallus. He elaborated this character in the style of film noir with hat and suit in subsequent works. The phallus-nosed figure also appears in his series Mule (2007), but there without trousers and instead with a view of a fleshy vulva.

  • Seine Arbeit weist u.a.
