The artist Lucian Freud

  • Counts among the most important portrait painters of the late 20th century.
  • The precise depiction of skin gave him the name »painter of human flesh«.
  • His works achieve record prices on the art market.

The success of the British artist Lucian Freud became apparent early on: in a children's exhibition in 1938, the London Gallery showed a drawing that Freud made when he was only eight years old. At that time, the artist, born in 1922, was still living in Berlin until 1933, when he fled to London with his Jewish family to escape the Nazis. At the age of 17, he began his studies at the East Anglican School of Painting and Drawing in Essex. His initial painting style was two-dimensional, with no trace of the impasto ductus.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Freud became part of the so-called School of London, a group of artists dedicated to figurative painting - at a time when abstract art was on the rise. He was close friends with Francis Bacon, who was also part of the group. While Bacon developed a biomorphic, already delusional style, Freud painted realistic nudes of his closest friends and family members. With analytical distance and precision, he brought the intimacy between himself and the model to the canvas. He depicted wrinkles, fat, scars and veins with loose impasto brushstrokes. Freud developed this style of painting especially in the 1960s and 1970s.

Freud's portraits provide less information about the person pictured than about his own relationship to them. According to him, his work was autobiographical: »It is about myself and my surroundings. It's an attempt at a report. I work about people who interest me, whom I like and think about, in spaces where I live and whom I know.« Also notable about Freud are the numerous self-portraits he made over a period of more than six decades. One of the best known is Reflection (Self-Portrait) from 1985. Freud's works are raw and honest, allowing us to look deeper into a person. However, the artist rejected a reference to his grandfather, the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.

Freud advanced to become a well-known artist during his lifetime. In 2004, art critic Robert Hughes called him »Britain's greatest living painter«. Prominent figures such as the British model Kate Moss and even Queen Elizabeth II were not deterred by Freud's unembellished painting style and posed for him. Freud worked indispensably until his death in 2011. His later portraits are characterized by an even more impasto application of paint. He also began to make etchings, as he had done early in his career as an artist. Regardless of the medium, Freud's works fetch top prices on the art market: Benefits Supervisor Sleeping achieved the record price of $33.6 million in 2008 for a painting by an artist still alive to that date.

Der Künstler Lucian Freud

  • Zählt zu den bedeutendsten Porträtmalern des späten 20. Jahrhunderts.
