Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Hiroshi Sugimoto achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in December 2021. In the First Open Online: Post War & Contemporary Art auction, the work Ionian Sea, Santa Cesarea sold for USD 50,000.00 (€ 44,177.42) - well above the upper estimate of USD 20,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Hiroshi Sugimoto achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Black Sea, Ozuluce; Yellow Sea, Cheju; Red Sea, Safaga in May 2007 with an auction result of USD 1,888,000.00 (€ 1,403,404.45).
