MAX ERNST (1891-1976) Two prints by the artist Including: Ohne Titel, etching and aquatint with hand-coloring, on Arches paper, 1950, signed in pencil, numbered 84/100 (there were also five artist's proofs in Roman numerals), published by Georges Visat, Paris; Pluie, from Paroles Peintes , etching in colors, on Japon paper, 1959, signed in pencil, numbered 'E.A. VI/VII' (an artist's proof, the edition was 56), published by Editions Galerie Diderot, Paris Largest Sheet: 18 5 ⁄ 8 x 15 1 ⁄ 4 in. (471 x 385 mm.)
Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Two prints by the artist by Max Ernst was auctioned at Christies in New York in April this year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 4,000.00 – 6,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 3,276.00 (€ 2,967.39). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Max Ernst achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Le roi jouant avec la reine in November last year with an auction result of USD 24,435,000.00 (€ 23,670,444.64).
Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne
Als die Arbeit Two prints by the artist von Max Ernst im April diesen Jahres bei Christies in New York versteigert wurde, fiel das Ergebnis ein wenig enttäuschend aus. Das Auktionshaus hatte den Schätzpreis zuvor mit einer Spanne von USD 4.000,00 – 6.000,00 angegeben, von der nicht einmal die Untergrenze erreicht wurde - tatsächlich wechselte das Kunstwerk für USD 3.276,00 (€ 2.967,39) den Besitzer. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Max Ernst erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Le roi jouant avec la reine im November letzten Jahres mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 24.435.000,00 (€ 23.670.444,64).
