The artist David Hockney

  • One of the most important painters of the 20th century.
  • Closely associated with Pop Art and Naturalism.
  • His Portrait of an Artist sold at auction for USD 90.3 million.

David Hockney, born on 09.07.1937 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, is one of the most important visual artists of the 20th century. Since the beginning of his artistic career, he has been influenced by various artists and has experienced several stylistic changes. Naturalism and Pop Art as well as artists such as Picasso  and Matisse made a major contribution to his creative development.

His Swimming Pool oil paintings (1964) from his early creative period in Los Angeles are some of his most influential and best-known works. Not only in the swimming pools, but also in many of his landscapes and portraits, the pastel, strong colour scheme, which largely concentrates on shades of blue and green, has probably become his most recognition feature.

After Hockney had made a name for himself with the Swimming Pool series, the British director Jack Hazans chose him as the topic of the 1974 film A Bigger Splash, which bears the title of one of the works from the series. In 1968 and 1974, Hockney was invited to participate in documenta 4 and documenta 6. Later, he temporarily concentrated on photo-experimental art and was in contact with personalities such as Heinrich Böll and Joseph Beuys.

In 1979 he became co-founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. In 1984, Hockney returned to painting and spent more and more time in his hometown in West Yorkshire in the 1990s until the death of his mother in 1999, which led him to depict the local countryside and at least to his plen air landscape paintings.

Early on, Hockney did not shy away from addressing socio-political issues in his work, for example, in his 1961 work We Two Boys Together Clinging, he depicted an amorous relationship between two men while still a student at the Royal College of Art in London - at a time when homosexuality, which Hockney himself openly admitted to, was still a indictable offence in Britain.

His Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972) achieved the highest auction price to that point for a work by a living artist at a Christie's sale on 15 November 2018, with a top bid of $90.3 million. Hockney has struggled with hearing loss for several decades.

Der Künstler David Hockney

  • Einer der bedeutendsten Maler des 20. Jahrhunderts.
